MOVIE REVIEW: Hunter Killer and Den of Thieves

23/08/2019 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV Leave a Comment

I’d been hanging out to see more Gerard Butler movies. With Geostorm and Gods of Egypt seeming long ago, and then I found Den of Thieves and Hunter Killer.

Both, I found, to be b-grade movies.

DEN OF THIEVES

A gritty L.A crime saga which follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Dept. and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan an impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.

Starring 50 cent and O’Shea Jackson Jr, it was a typical cops and robbers stick ’em up, shoot ’em out movie. There was sex, there were guns and drugs, there was violence. Meh!

I give it 5/10

HUNTER KILLER

A U.S. submarine vanishes while shadowing a Russian Akula-class submarine in the Arctic. Rear Admiral John Fisk sends a Virginia-class submarine under the command of newly-promoted and unorthodox Commander Joe Glass to investigate. At the same time, a Navy SEAL team under the command of Lieutenant Bill Beaman is sent in to discreetly observe a Russian naval base. When they arrive at the naval base, they witness defense minister Dmitri Durov conducting a coup d’etat and taking Russian President Zakarin prisoner, and swiftly realize that Durov intends to trigger a war…

Starring Common, yep, you read that right, and Gary Oldman who’s usually better at picking roles but maybe he needed the money… This movie was just okay. Okay enough to watch on a night when there’s nothing else on tv and you’re bored.

I give this 5/10

I think Gerry’s star has burnt out. His movies aren’t blockbusters anymore, he’s not the stud muffin he once was as he’s looking old and worn out. And god help me when Angel Has Fallen, the threequel, yep, you read that right, to Olympus and London Has Fallen comes out. I mean, geez, they killed off Angela Bassett in London, unless she killed herself off which wouldn’t surprise me the movie was shit, and Morgan Freeman must be hard up for money too as he’s back for the torture, but more on that when I actually see it.

Have you guys seen these and what did you think?

MOVIE REVIEW: Antman and the Wasp, and How To Train Your Dragon III

09/08/2019 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV 2 Comments

Antman and the Wasp

I’ve seen most of the Marvel movies by now, all out of sync, but I get the general gist. And when it comes to Antman, they’re quite funny and not so serious, which is what I like.

While there were a few saggy bits, and a few overdone bits, overall the movie was good. And you can tell I don’t have much to say, and no, it’s not much of a review, lol, but it’s all I’ve got. I’d recommend it for a laugh. 7/10.

How To Train Your Dragon III.

I’ve seen the first and second a few times, especially on tv, and couldn’t wait to see how the series ended. When the movie came out I saw reviews that mentioned lots of crying and whatnot, figured someone else died like Stoic did after #2. I cried after that, but I certainly didn’t expect to cry after this.

NAW!!!!!!!

No, no one dies, except the bad guy, and yes, the other characters are still as annoying as fuck, but it’s the whole, Hiccup letting Toothless go so he can be in love and mate. And then when Hiccup goes searching for Toothless to introduce his kids, you see Toothless is also a father and he recognises Hiccup.

NAW!!!!!!!

Toothless is so damn adorable that I want one. And trying out the whole mating ritual was hilarious, but it just sucked that they didn’t see each other again, and it took what, ten years for it to happen. Needless to say, I bawled like a baby for probably the last half an hour.

1,000,000/10

Movie reviews and a bit of a bitch. Independence Day Resurgence, Ghostbusters and Thor Ragnarok

23/08/2018 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV Leave a Comment

I don’t go to see movies at the cinema, but every time one comes out that I like the look of I think, mmm, that looks good I might watch that, and then I completely forget about it.

As I did with Independence Day Resurgence.

I’ve seen the first one multiple times as I love a good disaster film. And I do love me a bit of Jeff Goldblum, so this was on my list of ‘to watch’ movies. And then I forgot about it and waited until it came to tv. Unfortunately, when movies come to tv, they have bits cut out to fit into time frames.

Overall, I don’t think it was as detailed and intricate as the first. I found the movie to be a little weak on strength, as in strength of characters (they all seemed a little weak, intelligently, even Jeff’s character). It was nice that many came back from the first one, in keeping with the time line and all, but I found, and this could be from the network cutting bits out, that the new characters were not explained.

Who was Liam Hemsworth’s character? What was his back story? What was the back story of his friend who fell for the chinese girl? Hell, I don’t even remember his name, and that’s the problem, the story was not intricately laid out with detail, and I’m a detail girl. I NEED THEM! I also need to see things blow up and be destroyed.

I give it 8/10

Next came Ghostbusters with Liam’s brother Chris.

I fully understand what everyone was saying at the time this was announced and made. Movies, like tv shows, books, places, things, call us back to a time when our lives were good. They were the lives of our childhood, when times weren’t hard or overrun with bills and living expenses. It’s like when you go home to look at the school you went to or the house you lived in and it’s changed or gone. So are the memories. Because without the physical, you think the emotional will fade away.

Why do they generally continue to massacre the things we knew from our childhood that are linked to intricate memories and moments in our young, impressionable lives?

When I finally watched this on tv, I found it quite enjoyable. If you look at it like a standalone movie, and not a female remake of the old ones, it’s quite good for a bit of fluff and filler. While Kristen Wiggs’ character was emotionally weak and scared of too much until she grew a pair, Kate McKinnon’s was the funniest character.

I also see that all of the original cast, including Slimer, and except for Harold who’d already died but had a bust of himself outside of Kristen’s office, made an appearance.

Chris Hemsworth’s character was barely tolerable. While you can laugh and joke about them making a male role dumb for once, dumb characters actually turn me off. It’s like how they’ve made Nancy Drew books in the last ten years. She used to be strong and independent, now she’s an insecure clutz. Not my cup of tea.

I give it 8/10

Then came Thor Ragnarok. And Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum again.

I get it, this movie was fun and frivolous and good for a laugh and seeing Chris without the fake hair was a relief. Seeing Doctor Strange pop in was a bit of fun, as was seeing Jeff Goldblum, I do love me a bit of Jeff. The soundtrack was awesome, the explosive lightning out of Thor’s arms just as good, Cate Blanchett was a bitch, of course, and Loki finally got his shit together. For now.

Overall, I’d watch it again for something to see on a Saturday night and give it 8/10

Now, while I love a good movie, the problem I have is that Hollywood clearly can’t come up with anything new (above is one remake and two sequels). Instead of taking something that was already a mega huge hit and making it an all-female, all black, all Asian cast, why not make something along similar lines and call it something new.

They apparently want to make James Bond into Jane Bond? Why? Why not just make a kick arse show based on new characters in MI5 and name her something else? Why take a well established male character and make it female/black/asian just to make sections of the community happy? Why not just come up with SOMETHING NEW!!!!

Why does Hollywood constantly have to remake movies and tv shows? Why do tv shows have to continually come back with the old cast? Or new cast for that matter, like MacGyver, Charmed and Magnum PI? Why can’t they just make new versions, change them up, and give them a new name? How many times do you sit down to watch a new tv show that is another cop procedural or hospital drama and all they’ve done is give it a slight twist to make the character different.

I watched Deception last night. Never knew it existed. Another FBI procedural with a twist. The male role is a magician. Instinct, with Alan Cumming, is basically a Castle reboot except the character’s gay.

Why can’t Hollywood come up with something new for fucks sake?

I will be keeping my eyes open for new stuff coming our way, although considering we’re Australia, we don’t actually get to know what you guys have in America. Hell, channel 9 stopped showing Arrow years ago and yet channel 10 is going to start showing The Flash this week. Five years behind the times, channel 10!

Fuck knows why they bother!

What have you guys watched lately?

MOVIE REVIEWS: Wonder Woman and Justice League

31/05/2018 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV Leave a Comment

Yes, I know these came out last year, but I don’t go to the cinema and I’m usually waiting for them to come to dvd at my local library. I also completely forget about watching movies because I’m so damn busy.

So here are my reviews.

Wonder Woman…

Chris Pine 10 out of 10

The movie, meh, 6 out of 10.

Maybe it’s just because I found most of it boring. I get that movies, like books, need a slow build up, and we needed to see Diana as a child and how she came by her powers, but blimey, the whole, going to Europe thing was as boring as!

Are her powers awesome, yes.

Is her outfit awesome, not really.

I get that she’s half amazonian half god, and on an island like that they’re not going to wear much, and they need to swing from things and jump from horses, so, the less the better. And Linda Carter didn’t wear much more, but at least her outfit has colour.

And by the way, why is her hair so damn perfect even when she’s fighting? It’s like a Clairol ad!

And Chris Pine…naked…

I’ll leave you with that thought.

Justice League.

Oi.

I really only watched this to see Henry, and sped through most of it because, hey, boring.

What was the threat? Steppenwolf, a threat that barely had a mention in Batman V Superman, and yet here he is, just suddenly appearing. I think I really did speed through this section. Clearly I need to watch this movie again because Henry Cavill….shirtless…. seriously, how disgustingly good looking can one guy be…? And why is his voice so much deeper? And unfortunately they CGId his face because he was filming Mission Impossible at the time and had a face full of hair.

Finding new heroes, yeah, okay, I got used to The Flash on tv, so this dude, Ezra, was on my nerves a bit, but by the end of it, I was warming to him and found him kinda cute in a nerdy funny way.

Some gags were so obvious, some jokes, meh, I can see why Marvel has worked much better. I can also see why DC’s cartoons and Superman/Batman movies worked better. I just don’t think these characters are meant to be a big series like Marvel. It was really just one big long running joke of a movie.

The writing is blah, the acting is blah, unless you’re just watching for Henry Cavill, I mean, seriously… But he was only in it for what, forty minutes? And even then, shirtless….yeah, right, where was I….mmm, shirtless Superman….no, wait, the movie, it was boring mostly, some funny bits, some meh, I could have written that myself, and so not big movie series material.

I can see why they constantly remade Superman and Batman movies…but Henry Cavill….mmm, right, I gave Henry 10 out of 10 and the movie 6 out of 10.

What did you guys think of these movies?

Are you a DC or Marvel fan?

Or do you even give a shit?

MOVIE REVIEWS: I finally got to see Geostorm and London Has Fallen

24/05/2018 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV Leave a Comment

I was hanging out all last year to see Geostorm. I love a good disaster pic, and thought this would be one since Dean Devlin was behind it.

Overall, it was mediocre.

Some good actions scenes, some good end of the world blow ’em up scenes, but I just felt that it didn’t really cut it alongside bigger disaster flicks.

If it was on tv, I’d watch it again, hell, I’ve seen San Andres a few times lately, can’t really bypass a disaster flick, even if Gerard Butler is in it.

I give it 7 out of 10.

London Has Fallen.

I’ve also been hanging out to watch this, and while I did see it a while ago, it’s been on tv a fair bit lately so I’ve seen it a couple of times.

All the good stuff is at the beginning. All the blow ’em ups, London being torn apart, yada, yada, yada, and then it petered off. Olympus has Fallen was more violent, more action packed, this, not so much. And apparently there’s a third film in the trilogy on the way. No wonder Gerard’s producing partner didn’t want to touch this, yikes.

I give it 5 out of 10.

MOVIE REVIEWS: Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

10/05/2018 by L.J. Diva Filed Under: Movies & TV Leave a Comment

I know I’m only catching up on these movies now, but I don’t actually go to the cinema, and completely forgot how long ago Doctor Strange came out.

Two years!

Good grief.

But then I have sometimes put a movie on my ‘to watch’ list and then completely forgotten about it, only to remember years later. But with the new Avengers movie out now, I’m trying to catch up. Just not sure if I want to watch Black Panther…

So here are my reviews. Not earth shattering by any means…

Doctor Strange…

Parts were funny, I’ll give it that, such as when the cloak is trying to pull him in the direction of the apparatus he needs to restrain the bad guy…don’t expect names, I don’t remember.

Parts were drawn out, like the two main fight scenes. Boring.

The beginning was boring and I noticed Benedict’s yank accent wasn’t that good. Boring, boring, boring, doctor stuff, but I do get that every movie and book needs a build up to it’s climax. His accident was there, his hands were wild, gotta say that, almost Edward Scissorhands wild.

Tilda Swinton is always…into her roles and the end was to be pretty much expected.

God help us if there’s another movie coming.

I give it 6/10!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2…

Not funny like the first. I found some jokes to be simply sarcastic and insulting, much of it was boring, and yeah, we get the whole Star-Lord thing. But considering that’s all the movie was about, Peter finding his father, and Gamora’s sister trying to kill her, it was really boring for me.

The only good bits were baby Groot, coz he was so damn cute, and I did see at the end he was now teenage Groot and being told to clean his room up. Then there was Peter’s face when he was presented with a cheapo ipod, what was it, a Zune, and told it held 3000 songs. Didn’t tell him how to recharge it, though. And then there’s the soundtrack…

I give it 5/10

And whoever’s doing the movie/dvd posters, I’d love them to do my book covers!

Have you guys seen these movies, and what did you think?
